Retired PC Longstaff, following a 13 year career with the Royal Air Force Police, joined Northumbria Police in 2005 and was part of their specialist motor patrols team Operation Dragoon.
Towards the end of his career he took up the role of becoming their dedicated Road Safety Officer for the organisation, this involved education, engagement and enforcement.
Following his retirement in early 2024 Derek is now determined to continue to support road safety by using his knowledge and expertise that he has gained over the last 34 years, through both his military and police employment.

Road Safety Police Officer - delivering key presentations to numerous Schools, Adult Learning establishments, National businesses, Military units and supporting Local Authorities.

Education Officer – leading, developing and inspiring colleagues and the community within an educational environment.

Motor Patrols Road Safety Officer – delivering training to thousands of officers and members of the public across multi-site units in all aspects of the Law and Policy, along with safety surrounding policing issues on the road networks. As part of the Operational Support Unit investigating fatal and serious Road Traffic Collisions and training as a Family Liaison Officer supporting families following a fatality.
