About Derek Longstaff

About Derek Longstaff

Drive Safely Consultancy is led by Derek Longstaff, a former Northumbria Police Road Safety Officer and specialist motor patrol officer with over 34 years of experience across both the Royal Air Force Police and civilian policing.

Throughout his career, Derek has been at the forefront of road safety education, enforcement, and collision investigation, including working on serious and fatal road traffic incidents and supporting families as a trained Family Liaison Officer. He has delivered impactful training and presentations to schools, businesses, military units, and public sector organisations across the UK.

Now, following his retirement in 2024, Derek continues his mission to improve road safety by sharing real-world knowledge and experience—helping individuals and organisations make safer decisions and reduce risk on the road.

The knowledge gained was vital to help me become more confident

Derek was fantastic at explaining things and walking me through mistakes that I had made, such as stalling and road position, also giving me tips on what gears to use at what times to use them. Positioning on the road was key, and looking further ahead to predict what is going to happen.

The information and chats we had was a fantastic experience and a lot of knowledge was gained from today. All in all was a great experience and the knowledge gained was vital to help me become more confident.

At the start of my course I was very nervous driving with a trailerm but after 2 full days working with Derek and building my confidence up, testing different driving conditions and scenarios, by the end of the course I am very confident in parking and driving a trailer safely all thanks to Derek.
